Sutton Coldfield & North Birmingham Beekeepers Association Branch Honey Show 21st September 2024

Judges : Peter Lewis & Dave Shannon

Stewards: Julia Wigfield, Becca Mundye, Lisa Daymond-King & Lee Greatorex.

We had an amazing Honey Show on 21st September organised by Fiona Mundye, ably assisted by Izzy & Becca.

A big thank you for all the hard work everyone puts into this show to make it work, but especially to Fiona Mundye who without her work, the show would not happen.

The day started with a slight hiccup as we were unable to access the Hall at 08.30, eventually we got it to set up at 09.30 with the show open for entry and staging at 09.45.

It was a little tight, but with the Judges getting in touch and saying that they were stuck in traffic as the M1 had closed, we relaxed a little knowing that it would give us a little more time to get prepared.

There was a record amount of exhibits this year, 209 staged from 25 entrants. There were 22 classes ranging from light, medium, dark, heather & soft set/naturally crystallised honey. We had 13 frames for extraction, of which the Judge Peter Lewis commented as ‘very impressive’, there were wax blocks, sections of honey and bottles of mead. There were many honey cakes, honey biscuits & candies, and for the first time a Junior Member, Ava Rogers-Draycott claimed 1st place for her honey biscuits. The Judge Dave Shannon commented that the Show was of an excellent standard, quality exhibits (as ever) a real pleasure to judge’.

A donation of £80 will be made to St. Giles Hospice from the sale of entries from the Gift Class.

Lisa & Lee thoroughly enjoyed their first experience of stewarding and are looking forward repeating the experience.

Thank you to all that entered because without entries there is no Show, and well done to all those that won prizes and those who took home the following Trophies;

Progress Trophy &  Larard Trophy – Lee Greatorex

James Rose Bowl, Oakhurst Trophy, Bernard Diaper Shield, & Sutton Park Routh Challenge –

Simon Gniadkowski (there was only 1point between 1st and 2nd for the Bernard Diaper Shield)

Cowles Cup & Walter Diaper Cup – James Mundye

Organ Plate – Izzy Mundye

Best In Show – Sutton Coldfield & North Birmingham Beekeepers Association for heather honey extracted from the Park Apiary
